Best Music Shops in Greater Greenville
Musical Innovations 150-G Tanner Road Greenville, SC 29607 864-286-8742 This is a great store to find a wide variety of flutes in a range of prices. They sell many of the materials I use in my teaching, and offer discounts to those with good report cards.
Need a flute?
My most favored online resource for beginning, intermediate and professional instruments is Flute World. This business is a storefront in Michigan but will ship instruments to you on trial for 10 days. Their prices are among the best in the country, and their service is tops! I've purchased instruments for myself and for students from Flute World with great satisfaction. See their website for a large selection of new and used instruments, accessories, CD's and sheet music:
One of my favorite sites to get music books is Sheet Music Plus.com. They offer competitive prices, reasonable shipping rates and a large selection. Here's their website:
For accessories such as metronomes and tuners, I like to use Musician's Friend. Orders arrive inside of a week! If you want to take a look, here's their website:
Joy Sears, Flute Repair Specialist, Moore, SC 864-415-9780 www.joysears.com or fluterepair@joysears.com
FLUTE TUNE-UPS: Flutes must be serviced regularly (like a tune-up on your car) once or twice per year by a qualified repair specialist--not necessarily the local music store band instrument repairman. If a flute is not serviced, the following things occur: * the pads on the keys leak, causing the flute not to "speak" certain notes * the student begins to squeeze too hard on the keys, causing more damage and poor technique * the keys get out of alignment, causing the fingers to have to travel different distances to close keys, resulting in poor technique * the cork dries out, causing leaks All of these malfunctions can be avoided by keeping the flute in good shape. Typically, a band instrument repairman will simply tighten the screws, causing additional problems or damage to the flute, which is why only a flute specialist should work on the flute.
What's that fingering?
Larry Kranz' Flute Pages contain a plethora of helpful hints and links. One of its more valuable resources is the flute fingering information. There are several pages of fingerings and alternate fingerings that you may print out from your own computer! While you're there, take a moment to read some of the other great stuff!
For those of you who have plans for a future in music, you will find that a background in music theory is indispensable. Here's a website with FREE theory drills!
See also my own Theory Reminders page. While we do cover some theory in lessons, there never seems to be enough time to polish it properly. I encourage you to explore this website and enrich your skills!
South Carolina Flute Society
A great place for students, amateurs, and professionals to connect, the South Carolina Flute Society hosts one or two big events per year, including a concert, masterclass, and student competitions. Vendors come from all over to showcase their instruments and flute stuff, so it's a great place to try new things and get fresh inspiration. http://www.scflute.org/
